About NOAA CESSRST Fellowship Program 

NOAA CESSRST is funded by the NOAA Educational Partnership Program with Minority-Serving Institution (EPP/MSI). The Center is recruiting eligible undergraduate and graduate students, who are interested in academic fellowships or summer internships in support of research training, and professional experience in NOAA mission-related STEM fields. Each year nearly thirty-five (35) fellowships (25 Undergraduate & 10 Graduates) are made available to eligible students.

Eligibility Criteria

• A full-time student in one of the following universities/colleges:
  City university of New York, NY; San Diego State University, CA; University of Maryland, Baltimore County, MD; University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez, PR; University of Texas, El Paso, TX
• Must be a US Citizen. International students or permanent residents are not eligible for this opportunity.
• Major in one of these areas of discipline:
  Engineering, Science, Biology, Geosciences, Economics, Natural Sciences
  
• Maintain a 3.0 GPA and above
• First-generation and underrepresented minority (URM) community students are strongly encouraged to apply


Types of Funding Opportunities

• Academic (Fall, Spring, and Summer) year Cohort Funding (degree level)
• Summer (8-weeks) Internship (non-degree)

Fellowship Package

• Undergraduate students receive -
  • Research training [15 hours/week] with a stipend of $12,000/year.
• Master’s students receive -
  • Graduate research training [min 20 hours/week] and $25,000/year covering stipend, tuition, and travel
  • NOAA Experiential Research and Training (NERTO) $5,000/12-week internship
• Doctoral students receive -
  • Graduate research training [min 30 hours/week] and $36,000/year covering stipend, tuition, and travel
  • NOAA Experiential Research and Training (NERTO)$10,000/12-week to a one-year internship
• Summer Bridge Interns receive -
  • Summer research and professional development $4,000/8-week


Selection Process

• All students must apply through the Center’s online application site.
• The recruitment committee reviews eligible and fully completed applications.
• The recruitment selection committee recommends eligible candidates to the Center Campus PIs, and the Center Management, for personal interviews.
• Select faculty advisors and respective Campus PIs will interview the applicants, based on the students’ application, research areas of interest, and future career goals.
• The faculty advisor of the recommended candidates then submits his/her nomination for placement of the student in the cohort and research group by using the Center Management Information System [MIS] – an online recruitment portal.
• The Center Director and the Center Associate Director review the nominations and make the final decisions.
• Selected candidates receive a fellowship award letter, detailing the funding details and programmatic requirements.
