CESSRST research incorporates social sciences across all three research themes. The Social Science Framework aligns with Goal 2 in NOAA Social Science Vision and Strategy. It is also grounded in NOAA’s education mission “to advance environmental literacy and promote a diverse workforce in the ocean, coastal, Great Lakes, weather, and climate sciences.”
The social sciences are essential to helping NOAA achieve its mission. The 2016 NOAA Federal Funding Opportunity mandated that all NOAA Cooperative Science Centers integrate social sciences into their scientific and educational training of the next generation of diverse, young STEM professionals.
