CESSRST research incorporates social sciences across all three research themes. The Social Science Framework aligns with Goal 2 in NOAA Social Science Vision and Strategy. It is also grounded in NOAA’s education mission “to advance environmental literacy and promote a diverse workforce in the ocean, coastal, Great Lakes, weather, and climate sciences.”

Integrating Social Sciences at NOAA’s Center for Earth System Sciences and Remote Sensing Technologies

The social sciences are essential to helping NOAA achieve its mission. The 2016 NOAA Federal Funding Opportunity mandated that all NOAA Cooperative Science Centers integrate social sciences into their scientific and educational training of the next generation of diverse, young STEM professionals. Social Science Champion

The Center is growing the number of faculty with social science expertise across each of the campuses, with the goal of establishing an individual on each campus who will help coordinate social science research and activities. Champions include:

Social Science Training

All CESSRST students are required to complete the Social Science Core Competency requirements, with the goal of
  • Teaching students what social science is (and is not).
  • Helping students understand how NOAA uses social science
  • Providing that context-relevant understanding of how social science can enhance their research, and
  • Enhance the students’ ability to describe their research to non-technical audiences.
