What does the acronym NOAA mean?

NOAA stands for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

To which Executive Branch Department does NOAA belong?

NOAA is in the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) and is one of the twelve DOC Bureaus and Offices.

When was NOAA established?

The Agency was officially established in 1970.

How is the Agency organized?

The Undersecretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere leads the Agency. Along with the Corporate Functions are six major units called Line Offices. View the Organization Chart.

How is the NOAA CESSRST Fellowship funded?

Fellowships are funded through the Educational Partnership Program, a partnership between NOAA's Office of Education and Minority-Serving Institutions (MSI).

CESSRST is one of four Cooperative Science Centers (CSCs) that the NOAA EPP/MSI Program funds. The funding is competitive whoich means that NOAA solicits proposals from MSIs across the country and decides which institutions will host Fellowship programs. Centers are awarded 5-year grants to provide Fellowships. Learn more about the CSCs.

What is the purpose of the EPP/MSI Fellowship Program?

The Fellowship program is a STEM education and workforce development program. It focuses on:

• supporting the training and graduation of students and increasing participation of students from traditionally underrepresented minority communities;
• developing eligible candidates in support of a diverse future workforce for NOAA and NOAA mission-related enterprises; and,
• post-secondary education and research capacity development in atmospheric, oceanic, and environmental sciences and remote sensing technology at MSIs supported through competitive awards.

Which Line Office does the NOAA CESSRST work with most closely?

This Center works most closely with the National Environmental, Data, and Satellite Information Service (NESDIS). Each CSC works closely with one of NOAA's Line Offices.
