Joshua Hrisko

Joshua Hrisko
PhD, Mechanical Engineering, Graduate, 12/31/2020

Internship Location: College Park, MD

Internship Date: Summer 2018

Profile:

Hrisko received undergraduate degrees in Physics and Spanish from University of Delaware and a Master’s degree in Acoustics from Penn State University. His is interested in satellite calibration and validation, general product development, and other areas associated with big data analysis

NERTO Research Project Title:

GOES-R Air Temperature Model Development

NERTO Project Details :

NERTO Synopsis:

This assignment will involve working with the Land Surface Temperature team to validate GOES-16 LST products for the highly heterogeneous urban surfaces. The downscaling will be carried-out using high-resolution land cover classifications. The NERTO student will conduct cal/val of LST products against ground measurements to verify the accuracy and consistency of the GOES-16 TIR channels and Level-2 LST products. The student will also work in developing GOES-16 LST derived products for urban areas, specifically thermal storage and heat index.

NERTO Outcomes:

I spent a lot of time learning on my own, which resulted in very fast learning experiences during my 12 weeks at the NOAA facility. Weekly meetings helped keep my on track with the rest of the team, which helped supplement my educational objective and acquire the skills needed to perform and achieve success as I originally intended.

Value of NERTO to the Line Office:

Results from this NERTO help NEDSIS improve and further develop the NOAA GOES-16 satellite products for land surface temperatures for urban areas, and eventually increase the accuracy of weather prediction models for metropolitan areas.

NERTO Skills:

I became much more proficient in the Python programming language after my 12 weeks on the NERTO experience. I also learned quite a bit about map projections and statistical analysis.
