Some communities and areas in the Hudson River basin in NY State are facing special challenges regarding water quantity and availability, and water quality. Some of these issues are related to, or exacerbated by, the relatively weak provisions for state or regional leadership on water resources planning and management in this part of the state. At present, it is largely up to counties, groups of local municipalities or individual towns, villages and cities (as well as NGOs and other interested stakeholders) to play an active role in water resources planning, management, seeking resources for research and technical assistance, and coordinating on a watershed or other regional basis. The presentation will include an overview of the geographic context and some watersheds in the mid-Hudson region north of NY City, and of research that can be useful for informing coordination and dialogue among municipalities and other stakeholders.
