Location: Steinman Hall, Grove School of Engineering, City College of New York
Dr. Melissa Burt Assistant Dean, Diversity and Inclusion, Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering, CSU Research Scientist, Department of Atmospheric Science, CSU
Dr. Matt Rogers Research Scientist II and Education and Outreach Coordinator, Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere
The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program at Colorado State University offers a ten-week, intensive research experience for undergraduate students interested in having a deeper understanding of earth system science. Paired with leading researchers, students participating in the REU program develop a meaningful and relevant research project that fosters scientific education, provides students with a significant jump in career readiness, and benefits scientific research as a whole. Students who participate are provided with round-trip airfare, a stipend, furnished housing, and professional development, beyond the immersive and valuable research experience.
This years’ REU program is being extended to focus on pathways into careers with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA has long identified developing opportunities to engage and train undergraduates into the NOAA ‘pipeline’, and as part of the 2020 REU program, the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA), a NOAA Cooperative Institute, will be offering direct access to work with NOAA-affiliated and/or NOAA researchers directly, on current NOAA research. In addition to the diverse areas of research traditionally explored within atmospheric science, including cloud microphysics, severe storms and mesoscale meteorology, atmospheric chemistry, atmosphere-ocean dynamics; the CIRA-focused REU programs will provide opportunities to discover artificial intelligence and machine-learning focused research, hurricane and tropical storm forecasting, satellite remote sensing, severe weather, and other topics of interest to NOAA.
Dr. Burt and Dr. Rogers will highlight the opportunities of this years’ program and will be available for follow-up meetings (on-site) for interested students.
