Abstract:
NOAA’s new generation Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite R Series (GOES-R) is now on station to foster significant improvements in weather, water, climate, and hazard forecasts and alerts. The first two satellites in the series of four (GOES-R, S, T, U), now GOES-16 (GOES-East) at 75.2W and GOES-17 (GOES-West) at 137.2 W provide continuity for our nation’s 40+ years of geostationary satellite observations of the western hemisphere. We continue to learn more every day how to use the advanced capabilities of the GOES constellation, alone and integrated with measurements from the other research and operational satellite missions. A wholly new instrument, the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM), and the additional channels on the 16-channel Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI), provide substantially improved spectral, spatial and temporal resolution with more timely, detailed, and accurate information than ever before. In this presentation we showcase the research and applications that will help improve forecasts and warnings of high impact weather and environmental phenomena to benefit society throughout the Americas, Caribbean, Atlantic, and Pacific Ocean basins.
