Abstract: Coupled human-environment system of systems is characterized by uncertainty, limited predictability,
bounded rationality, indeterminate causality, and evolutionary change. Within this system of systems, different social, economic, political and physical systems interact. When making decisions, policy makers should have a holistic view of such interactions as any new
policy will affect more than one system. To determine the adequacy of a specific policy intervention, an integrated analysis approach is needed of a complex, coupled human-environmental system of systems.
In this seminar, Kaveh Madani highlights some of the major limitations of modelling and analysis tools that are used for nexus and complex systems analysis and modeling to argue why we often fail to develop comprehensive technological and policy solutions that can solve on problem without creating new ones.
