About the speaker:
Dr. Thomas M. Smith is a Physical Scientist at Satellite Applications and Research/NOAA and CICS/ESSIC/University of Maryland. He pursued his undergraduate degree in mathematics and MS in meteorology, both from Rutgers University. Dr. Smith has a PhD in oceanography from University of Delaware. Dr. Smith spend the summer of 1985 at NASA/GISS doing research for his MS and also was UCAR post-doctoral fellow at NOAA/CPC (1990-91) and then was hired by NOAA/CPC 1991. Transferred to NOAA/NESDIS in 2000, first at NCEI and then at STAR since 2007. Dr. Thomas Smith work has mostly involved data analysis, including model-output and observations, for better understanding large-scale climate variations. Some analyses contributed to have also been used to help weather and climate prediction.
