Forest and Wetlands Observations from Space: Radar Remote Sensing in Support of International Environmental Agreements

Event Date: March 7, 2018

You are cordially invited to attend our next CREST monthly Seminar Series presentation.

DATE: Wednesday, March 7, 2018

TIME: 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. EST

LOCATION: City College of New York, Steinman Hall, Room 105

SPEAKER: Dr. Ake Rosenqvist (soloEO)

TOPIC: “Forest and Wetlands Observations from Space: Radar Remote Sensing in Support of International Environmental Agreements”

About the speaker:

Ake Rosenqvist received the M.S. degree in surveying in 1988 from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, and the Dr. Eng. degree in microwave remote sensing from the University of Tokyo in 1997. He joined the Swedish Space Corporation in 1990, where he was engaged in the French/Swedish SPOT programme. As first foreign national, he was invited to the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA) in 1993, where he became involved in the development of the JERS-1 applications programme, and the establishment of the JERS-1 SAR Global Forest Mapping project. He was awarded the ISPRS President’s Honorary Citation in 2000 for promoting remote sensing technology in support to the UNFCCC Kyoto Protocol. Ake spent 6 years at the European Commission Joint Research Centre in Ispra, Italy, working with EO-based forestry and wetlands applications and another 5 years as Senior Scientist at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) where he developed the concept of systematic data observations, which was adopted by JAXA and implemented for the ALOS PALSAR and ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 missions.

About the organization:

Ake founded solo Earth Observation (soloEO) in 2009 with office in Stockholm, Sweden and Tokyo, Japan. soloEO is currently supporting JAXA's ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 mission with observation strategy planning and management of its Kyoto & Carbon Initiative scientific applications programme. soloEO is also supporting the Argentinian Space Commission (CONAE) in the development of the national and global data acquisition strategies for the SAOCOM-A and -1B radar satellite constellation missions, and NASA Langley Research Center with the integration of SAR data in prototype Data Cubes for REDD+ countries.

soloEO has also supported the European Space Agency (ESA) with observation planning for the SAOCOM Companion Satellite (SAO-CS) tomographic and bi-static mission (2015-2017, mission now discontinued). On behalf of JAXA and the Norwegian Space Centre's (NSC), Ake has been involved in the development of the Global Forest Observations Initiative (GFOI) since its start in 2008 and together with USGS and ESA co-chaired the Committee of Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) Space Data Coordination Group (SDCG) 2009-2014. soloEO has since 2013 also supported the coordination of the GFOI R&D program, currently under the lead of GOFC-GOLD.
