Title: "Drinking Water for Underserved Communities: The importance of Understanding the Needs, Perceptions, and Practices"
Abstract
Different technologies are available for treating the water to meet safe drinking standards, but as it can be in any place, especially in a developing country, social, economic and practical considerations should be taken into account. This presentation speaks of the importance of describing and comparing water use perceptions and practices in underserved communities and how this is intrinsically connected to the selection of the technology for water treatment. Dr. Santiago will present three different case studies: East El Paso, Ciudad Juárez (Mexico), and Po Ploom (Haiti) where technology used for treating water for drinking was dictated by socio-economic factors. In the case studies presented the goals were the same but the challenges were different
About the Presenter: Dr. Santiago’s main responsibility is to connect education to professional practice. In her senior design capstone courses, she has provided students with real-world applications by partnering with the City of El Paso, the County of El Paso, El Paso Water, private developers and non-profit organizations. The senior design projects range from fire stations to solar-powered water treatment plants
This seminar will be virtual on Bluejeans, see connectivity data below.
