Seminar: Observation and Simulation Urban Weather and Climate

Date: September 16th, 2016

Time: 12pm

Guest Speaker: Dr. Robert Bornstein, San Jose State University

Urban areas alter atmospheric energy and moisture balances to create unique weath- er patterns and local climates. This presentation thus both reviews processes creating urban climates and recent advanc- es in urban PBL modeling, with an empha- sis on urban impacts on summer convec- tive thunderstorms.

Prof. Bornstein has been at SJSU since 1969. His Ph.D. is from NYU, and his re- search interest is observation and simula- tion of urban atmospheres in changing cli- mates. He has been Executive (or Emeri- tus) Editor of Atmospheric Environment since 1987; served on the WMO Commis- sion for Urban and Building Climatology (2004-9); and was the first American to receive the AMS (2008) and IAUC (2008) lifetime achievement awards for urban research.
