From the Caribbean to the Great Barrier Reef, climate change is killing corals and destroying coral reefs, but what do we really know about our planet's reef systems? Historically, limitations in scientific resources and technology meant that for every reef we observed, dozens more were unmonitored. Yet, the answers to how coral reef ecosystems might weather the impacts of climate change may reside in any one of these gaps in our coverage. How then do we close these gaps? The answers may lie in disruptive innovation in science - creating new technological tools and novel means to gather and process information. Why can't we all become part of the solution?
