In an effort to promote a broader awareness of emerging technologies in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s observing system portfolio, the agency will host the Second Annual NOAA Emerging Technologies for Observations Workshop on August 22-23, at NCWCP in College Park, Maryland.

To capture the enormous breadth of NOAA observations, the workshop will bring together NOAA researchers, analysts, and practitioners of systems - both traditional and nontraditional; both remote sensing and in situ - across the following four domains: Oceans, Atmosphere, Terrestrial, and Space. In addition, this year's workshop will include a session on Data Management and Analytics, two industry sessions, and an inter-governmental panel.

The workshop will focus on showcasing, and possibly infusing, both sensors and platforms that could replace or improve current capabilities, lower costs, and fill current gaps within the next 3 to 5 years. In a series of twenty-four ten-minute presentations, the workshop will highlight the key research, collaborations, projects, and efforts within NOAA’s community of emerging technologies.

Workshop Registration

  • All attendees of the 2017 NOAA ETW must register in order to attend the event. The workshop will be held in a Federal Government-owned facility with a security detail. On-site registrations and walk-ins are not permitted.
  • Registration is free, however, the workshop organizers can offer no funding for travel to the workshop.
  • NOAA employees are responsible for getting travel funding approval from their respective Line Office, and for submitting their name for the NOAA Group Travel Request. This step may be done after you register, but should be done as soon after you register as possible.
  • NOAA contractors, and all non-NOAA attendees are completely responsible for the entirety of their own travel funding and travel arrangements.

Projected Outcomes

The NOAA Emerging Technologies Workshop will advance NOAA's mission by allowing us to:

  • Better understand emerging technologies and capabilities;
  • Consider how these might meet NOAA observation requirements and impact NOAA programs; and,
  • Promote collaboration between NOAA Strategy Councils

Workshop Structure and Goals core sessions, organized by the following observing system domains: Oceans, Atmosphere, Terrestrial, and Space.

  • Four "domain sessions," organized by the following observing system domains: Oceans, Atmosphere, Terrestrial, and Space - as well as a new session on Data Management and Analytics.
  • Each session will be approximately 80-90 minutes long, and will feature several 10-minute presentations, with each presentation spotlighting a different observing system capability.
  • It is the aim of the organizers to capture the breadth of NOAA within each domain, with a balanced of both remotely sensed and in situ systems.
  • There will be a focus on technologies that NOAA would consider incorporating in the Fiscal Year 2019-2023 time-frame.
  • There will be a focus on technologies that could replace and/or improve current capabilities, lower costs, fill current gaps, and/or could enhance the balance in the existing observation portfolio.
  • The workshop will include a techincal/scientific poster session, which will provide additional information on many of the featured emerging technologies, as well as many others of high interest.

Important Dates:

  • Call for abstracts opens on: May 23, 2017
  • Deadline for abstract submission: 5:00 PM (Eastern) June 23, 2017 (submission form)
  • Notification of abstract acceptance by: July 11, 2017
