NOAA EPP/MSI CESSRST Scholar Helps Build a Virtual Mentoring Program

NOAA EPP/MSI CESSRST Earth System Sciences and Remote Sensing graduate scholar, Veeshan Narinesingh collaborated with the National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP) and the Harlem Gallery of Science (HGS) to build the NSBP-HGS Mentoring Program. Through competent mentorship provided by role models in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), the program empowers underserved youth from Harlem, Upper Manhattan, and the South Bronx. Veeshan also continues his National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) mission-driven doctoral research titled, “Understanding the Physical Characteristics of Atmospheric Blocking Using a hierarchy of General Circulation Models.” He is conducting the research under NOAA CESSRST faculty advisor Jimmy Booth, Assistant Professor at CCNY and NOAA mentor, Dr. Yi Ming, Leader, Division of Atmospheric Physics at NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL).

The distance mentoring program was launched on October 23, 2020. Commenting on the motivation behind the initiative, Veeshan said, “Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, learning has become virtual. This has restricted the in-person social interactions with peers and teachers that students would have otherwise experienced and thus increased challenges like loneliness that the latter face. So, the idea of this program is to create a safe space for youth to not only share their aspirations, struggles, and experiences but also learn from mentors who look like them, have similar interests as them, and are overcoming obstacles to achieve goals that they relate to.”
