NOAA EPP/MSI CESSRST Scholar Awarded the Second Position at ASFPM Conference

NOAA EPP/MSI CESSRST Earth System Sciences and Remote Sensing graduate scholar Equisha Glenn awarded the second position at the Association of State Floodplain Managers Foundation’s (ASFPM) 11th Annual Collegiate Student Paper Competition for her National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) mission-driven doctoral research. The research is titled, ‘A New Framework for Detecting Coherent Floods in the U.S. for Flood Risk Management.’ She is conducting the research under NOAA CESSRST faculty advisor, Dr. Naresh Devineni, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at The City College of New York (CCNY), and NOAA mentor, Dr. Thomas M. Smith, Physical Scientist at NOAA’s Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR).

ASFPM foundation works towards ‘reducing risk and impacts of floods on people and communities.’ This competition was part of the 2021 ASFPM virtual conference. It encouraged students to submit an abstract related to floodplain or storm water management which was judged by a panel of floodplain management professionals. After the review, three finalists were invited to submit their papers and present at the conference. Equisha was amongst the top three who competed for the first ($1000 scholarship), second ($500 scholarship), and third ($250 scholarship) place.
