NOAA EPP/MSI CESSRST Scholar Alumnus Bags a Job with NOAA/NESDIS/NCEI through NOAA’s New Direct Hire Authority

NOAA EPP/MSI Center for Earth System Sciences and Remote Sensing (CESSRST) graduate scholar alumnus, Adedoja Adeyeye bags a job with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)/ NOAA National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS)/ National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) through NOAA’s New Direct Hire Authority. Adedoja, like other NOAA CESSRST students, became eligible for federal jobs through Direct Hire Authority, as a result of his successful completion of 12 weeks long NOAA Experiential Research and Training Opportunities (NERTO) training in a NOAA federal facility. He also completed his NOAA mission-driven master’s research titled ‘Development of Urban Hydro-meteorological Testbed (NY-uHMT) Network for New York City (NYC)’ to graduate in 2018. He conducted the research under NOAA CESSRST faculty advisor Dr. Tarendra Lakhankar, Senior Research Scientist at The City College of New York (CCNY), and Dr. Reza M. Khanbilvardi, Director of NOAA CESSRST.

Adejoja began his job with NOAA/NESDIS/ NCEI as a physical scientist in August 2020. His role involves monitoring and processing surface marine data from the International Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set (ICOADS). He also works towards providing insight into modernizing data collection methods using artificial intelligence and cloud-based technologies. Commenting on lessons and skills learnt through NOAA EPP/MSI CESSRST training and funding while pursuing his master’s degree in civil engineering at CCNY, Adedoja said, “At work, I heavily use the remote sensing concepts that I was introduced to by NOAA CESSRST’s research and training. I am also thankful to the agency for helping me develop and advance skills like public speaking, computer coding, and making informative data visualizations.” Elaborating on the biggest takeaway so far from his job, Adedoja said, “My understanding of NOAA’s initiative on cloud-based data integration and its networking with large organizations such as Amazon Web Services, Oracle, and Microsoft Azure, has improved.
