NOAA EPP/MSI CESSRST Earth System Sciences and Remote Sensing alumna, Ishrat Jabin accepts a full-time job in National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Office of Science Support (OSS) at Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR) Headquarters. She began working as the Management and Program Analyst on June 21st, 2021. Ishrat graduated with a Master’s degree in Earth System Science and Environmental Engineering in May 2021 from The City College of New York (CCNY) upon successful completion of her NOAA mission-driven research titled, ‘Analyzing the Climate and Human Impact of Cash Crops on Select California Watershed.’ She conducted the research under NOAA CESSRST advisors, Dr. Indrani Pal, Research Scientist and Dr. Valerie Were, Social Science Lead and NOAA mentors Dr. Laura Newcomb, OAR, and Dr. Meka Laster, Program and Policy Analyst, OAR.
Ishrat became eligible for federal jobs through NOAA’s Direct Hire Program, after successfully completing her 12-weeks long NOAA Experiential Research and Training Opportunities (NERTO) training in a NOAA federal facility. Ishrat believes that working on her NERTO internship helped her gain this job opportunity. Ishrat said, “This opportunity provided my NOAA mentors the chance to first-hand learn about my strengths, qualities, work ethics, and technical competence.” Further, she elaborated, “During NERTO, working virtually for 40 hours per week and being in constant communication with my co-workers prepared me for the real-world 9-5 work schedule.”
