NOAA-CESSRST Researcher Awarded DOE Grant

New York, NY, October 12, 2017– The Office of Science of the Department of Energy selected Dr. Naresh Devineni as one of 59 researchers to receive its 2017 Early CAREER Award. A total of $750,000 over the next five years will support his project: "Multi-scale Modeling of Extreme Events and Impact Information.”

“If I can initiate the conversation between water resources engineers and atmospheric scientists for better understanding of the earth system, it will improve the prediction models and result in better engineering designs and planning for the future,” said Devineni.

Devineni, a NOAA-CREST researcher and assistant professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at City College of New York, will look at extreme events and apply causality models to analyze the earth system dynamics from a physics and statistics perspective. The first phase of the project focuses on data compilation and analysis to understand better, the variability in extreme events, including tornados, heat stress, and high winds, along with their causes. The second phase, says Devineni, is developing a hydrologic extremes prediction model that is based on Bayesian learning.

“It is a real honor to be selected for this award. I have started the initial phase of the investigation and I look forward to a productive few years,” Devineni said.
