Calling all STEM-focused high school students! Don't miss your chance to join the High School Initiative in Remote Sensing of the Earth Systems Science and Technology, also known as HIRES. Applications are closing soon.
HIRES focuses on STEM education which is an increasingly important part of the today’s workforce and economy. HIRES provides and encourages high-quality science and technology activities and initiatives in after-school programs.
About the program
The summer program kicks off with an intensive orientation week that includes bootcamp sessions in areas such as statistical analysis, how to think like a computer scientist, hands-on remote sensing, and physics.
For the formal program, students enroll in a City College course in the morning, EAS 213000, Engineering Geology and receive 3 City College credits. Participants learn Matlab, Python, and GIS. Once the classroom instruction is completed, students are immersed in hands-on research with CREST faculty, research scientists, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students. There are also numerous site visits to scientific facilities in the New York tri-state area including: National Weather Service Office at Brookhaven National Laboratory (Upton, NY), Cary Institute (Millbrook, NY) and Palymra Cove Nature Park (Palmyra, NJ). HIRES culminates with the CUNY Summer STEM Symposium, which is held in the Great Hall at the City College of New York.
All HIRES students create and present a poster of their summer research. Many HIRES research cohorts give oral presentations of their work as well. All posters are judged by a panel of faculty and graduate students. Top HIRES students are awarded for excellence in poster presentation.
