NOAA EPP/MSI CESSRST Earth System Sciences and Remote Sensing graduate scholar, Ishrat Jabin successfully presented her 12-week NOAA Experiential Research and Training Opportunities (NERTO) at the NOAA Central Library Seminar on September 29th, 2020. The presentation was titled, ‘Understanding the Role of Uncrewed Systems in NOAA with the NOAA R&D Database.’ This title aligns with her interests, passion and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) mission. “I worked with my NOAA NERTO mentors to initiate, develop and hone my research writing and presentation. I feel grateful that I received the opportunity to not just share my work at the Central NOAA Library Seminar but also submit it to the American Fisheries Society.”
In her presentation, Ishrat demonstrated the importance of uncrewed systems and investigated whether the textual analysis tools on NOAA Research and Development (R&D) Database (NRDD) can be used to derive information that helps in better understanding of the NOAA’s observing systems applications. She emphasized NRDD’s capability to house project management data for all researches and development conducted at NOAA and its key features like query builder. Further, she expanded on her analysis approach of developing list of query terms, using query builder in NRDD to download tabular data, supervising manual classification, processing data in R and conducting tidy text analysis using TF-IDF. Commenting on the opportunity to present, Ishrat said “I created awareness about the NRDD and its benefits. I feel, showcasing what NOAA is doing with uncrewed systems was even more critical during 2020, a year where everything transitioned to a virtual setting due to COVID-19.”
