NOAA EPP/MSI CESSRST Earth System Sciences and Remote Sensing graduate scholar, Ishrat Jabin clears the selection process to receive a full-time job offer from Integrated System Solutions Inc. (ISS) to support the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Technology, Planning, Integration for Observation (TPIO) division. She will begin working as a Scientific Support Analyst from June 2021. Ishrat is currently pursuing her NOAA mission-driven research titled, ‘Analyzing the Climate and Human Impact of Cash Crops on Select California Watershed.’ She is conducting the research under NOAA CESSRST advisors, Dr. Valerie Were, Social Science Lead, and Dr. Indrani Pal, Research Scientist and NOAA mentors Dr. Laura Newcomb, Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR) and Dr. Meka Laster, Program and Policy Analyst, OAR.
This position aligns with Ishrat’s goals and passion. She eagerly looks forward to learning in detail about her job responsibilities. Commenting on her keen interest in TPIO which is responsible for managing NOAA’s Integrated Environmental Observation and Data Management System Architecture, Ishrat said, “I really like TPIO’s scientific and data component. I am excited to not only learn about NOAA’s missions and projects but also utilize data analytics in everyday tasks at work.” Ishrat is thankful to her NOAA Experiential Research & Training Opportunities (NERTO) mentor, Dr. Meka Laster, and Dr. Shakila Merchant, Assistant Director, NOAA CESSRST for introducing her to Martin Yapur, Director, TPIO. Ishrat said, “Intrigued by Martin’s journey and career growth, I interviewed him in summer 2020. Then in 2021, I reconnected with him through Dr. Merchant. Upon learning about my skill-sets and interests, Martin introduced me to leaders at TPIO and ISS who were approachable and gave me helpful advice.”
Ishrat believes that her NOAA mentors, Dr. Meka Laster and Dr. Laura Newcomb not only supported her training and professional development but also encouraged her to network and come out of her comfort zone, which helped her secure the position.
