The University of Puerto Rico was created by an act of the Legislative Assembly on March 12, 1903. It was in the College of Agriculture that the Mayauez Campus had its origin. The strengthening and diversification of the academic programs at Mayauez were recognized years later when, in 1942, the campus was organized with a considerable degree of autonomy into the Colleges of Agriculture, Engineering and Science.

CESSRST research projects at UPRM are conducted under the following themes:


Theme I: Coastal Resilience
Project: CESSRST Coastal Ocean Observing Systems

Theme III: Water Prediction and Ecosystem Services
Project: Hydrologic extremes-A systematic risk assessment of droughts and floods using 
in-situ and remote sensing products

CESSRST remote sensing facilities at UPRM includes: (1) The Bio-Optical Oceanography Laboratory (http://bio-optics.uprm.edu) which is one of the most advanced laboratories studying bio-optical properties in the Caribbean region. The laboratory is located at Isla Magueyes Field Station of the Department of Marine Sciences in La Parguera, Lajas, Puerto Rico and (2) The Lidar Laboratory at ECE Department.

CESSRST remote sensing instruments at UPRM include: DBS system, CIMEL Sun-photometer, Pyrometers, Radiosonde System, and CESSRST L-Band Microwave Unit .
