Research Title: Pandora column nitrogen dioxide analysis and comparisons with OMI and lidar
Research Synopsis: I will apply the skills I aquired during the 2020 CESSRST summer bridge program and perform analysis on column nitrogen dioxide measurements from the Pandora instrument at HU. I will also be specifically monitoring the observations for anomalous events. I will apply trajectory analyses using the Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model to determine the origin of anomalous column nitrogen dioxide measurements determined from the Pandora instrument and the HU opo-enhanced lidar. In addition, comparisons with coincident Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) measurements will be made. The Direct Broadcast System (DBS) Antenna Receiving and Data Analyses System will also be used to retrieve real-time data from various satellites automatically when they are within our acquisition of signal capabilities. Presently, we are tracking 11 satellites every day including JPSS-1 and Suomi-NPP, Access to real-time data (such as meteorological, atmospheric constituent, and imagery data) can enhance the effectiveness of our capability to glean information on significant events, especially for upstream events (e.g.: smoke from forest fires, volcanic plumes, desert dust storms, and chemical spills). One main goal of this research is to build the capacity of the HU ground based measurement systems in preparation of the TEMPO launch in 2022.
