Research Title: Hazel Nut Grove Historical Mapping

Research Synopsis: Hazel Nut Grove is a homeless community of about 20 to 30 people. Hazel Grove has significant economic issues for the homeless community that is a part of Portland, Oregon. People have been living in this community on and off for well over 100 years. They consist of numerous tiny homes, tents, and other living styles so people who live there can feel somewhat sheltered from outside life. The area sits on environmental hazards that were once home to industrial land use. The site is problematic to landslides, soil pollution, and fire risks. Unfortunately, Portland and its mayor want to remove the homeless community to a worse spot than what they are already living on. My goals are to create working web maps that display the historical buildings once on the land. To demonstrate the unique hazards that the homeless community is dealing with. Explain the ongoing support each of them has for each other through a well-defined story map—mapping who was once on the lands, the red-lining effects, and additional historical information. My overall goal is to make people aware who are in the Portland area that the Hazel Nut Grove community deserves a better living conditioned place and should not despise due to the way they live. Everyone needs help, and getting them the best support they need is not removing them to another broken land area.
