Research Title: Downscaling of GOES-R Land Surface Temperature Products

Research Synopsis: Thermal satellite images are used to create Land Surface Temperature (LST) products which aid in the monitoring of phenomena like the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. The study of UHI is limited either by the spatial or temporal resolution of current satellite platforms. Satellites in low earth orbit can achieve spatial resolutions below 100 meters but their temporal resolution is measured in days to weeks. Satellites in geostationary orbit such as GOES-R can achieve temporal resolutions of minutes to hours but their spatial resolution is in the kilometer scale. Data fusion using signal processing or statistical techniques can be used to take the best resolution qualities from different satellite platforms to produce LST products with higher spatial and temporal resolution, which can enhance the monitoring of the UHI effect to aid urban planning, energy use recommendations, and extreme heat forecasts.
